1931 – 2022

Artis Kendall Cummings (91) of Hudsonville, Michigan, was born August 9, 1931, and died December 1, 2022, in his home and under the care of his family. He lived a strong and vibrant life well into his ninetieth year, but he began to suffer complications of an aging earthly body during his final six months of life.

Art served in the military for two years before marrying the love of his life, Martha Jane. He earned his bachelor’s degree and later his master’s. He taught school for thirty-four years. His subjects included government, history, and English. Throughout his career, Art’s job titles included teacher, principal, and counselor — all within Hudsonville Public Schools. He later earned his certificate of biblical counseling and served many in the community and local church.

After Martha passed away in 2012, Art stayed in his own home for one year before moving in with his daughter, Jane Meadows (Mike). He remained strong and independent for most of those nine years, driving his truck, taking his daily walk at the Grand Ravines Park, and assisting family and friends with projects.

Artis Cummings loved Jesus and wanted everyone to know the good news of the gospel. Through his patience, kindness, humor, ability to listen, gentleness, and faithful devotion to his Creator, he became a true patriarch of his family and an exemplary life to model.

Art was preceded in his death by his beloved wife, Martha, his parents, all of his siblings, and one grandchild. His strong legacy will continue through his family, who will miss him dearly: his four children Nolan (Elda), Ron (Mari), Jane (Mike), and Judy; ten grandchildren; and twenty-five great-grandchildren!
